    • Continuing with one of my goals for 2023 - to see more Indian popular (ie non-arthouse) cinema - last night’s choice was B. R. Chopra’s romantic melodrama, with a screenplay credited to the Story Department of his production company, B. R. Films.

As with many melodramas, the story is a convoluted one, and there were times when I had some difficulty picking up on Chopra’s messaging - sometimes, it feels like a champion of women’s emancipation but for much of the time it feels like a chauvinistic (and occasionally even misogynistic) exhortation along the lines of “Women, obey your husbands!”.

Sisters Meena (Mala Sinha) and Kamla (Nirupa Roy) are the daughters of a wealthy Nainital retiree (Nana Palsikar).
