She is an author of young-adult fiction best known for her Fallen series, which benefitted from many months of theological research. She received an M.A. in Creative Writing from UC Davis, where she also teaches. In , Disney optioned the film rights to the entire series on the day of Fallen's release.

In the process, I also met some wonderful writers and got to read a lot of great works. So yes, it was a good thing.”
When asked how large a part her M.A. in Creative Writing played in the writing of Fallen?
