In 1906, Siewdass Sadhu was three years old when he and his parents arrived in Trinidad from India. They came as indentured labourers and settled in Barrancore (now Brickfield). At a time when Hinduism was not legally recognized by and actively discriminated against by the government, Sadhu built his first temple off the coast of Waterloo in central Trinidad in 1947. However, it was situated on unused land owned by the well-known sugarcane company Tate and Lyle. They proceeded to demolish the house of worship in 1952 and persecuted Sadhu for trespassing. He was fined a large sum of money and imprisoned for fourteen days. Sadhu determined that he would one day establish the site of his dreams, declaring it would be on “no man’s land”. After serving his sentence, he single-handedly began laying the foundation for his plan. With a bicycle as his sole transportation he hauled sand, rocks, and other raw materials in a leather bag to build a 200 meter pathway out into the gulf. This led worshippers to the physical temple, which took seventeen years to finalize. After Sadhu’s untimely death in 1970, production was halted and the sea consumed his progress.
