Downtown Buys Catalog of ‘Dancing In the Street’ Songwriter William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson
Downtown Music Publishing, which recently hired the Raine Group to explore strategic options, continues to buy music publishing assets with its latest acquisition of the catalog of legendary Motown songwriter, producer and A&R executive William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson.
According to Downtown, it has purchased the publishing share of Stevenson’s early songs and the writer’s share of his songs released in 1965 or after that. Stevenson’s catalog includes “Dancing In the Street,” “Stubborn Kind Of Fellow;” “Devil With The Blue Dress,” and “Beechwood 4-5789,” among other tunes.
“Opportunities to work with a catalog of this caliber don’t come around that often,” Downtown Music Publishing’s global president Mike Smith said in a statement. “It is a genuine privilege to work with someone like Mickey, who is not only an important songwriter, but a pivotal figure in the musical legacy of Motown.
